A boiler is a device that heats water, providing either hot water or steam for heating. Steam flows through pipes and steam radiators. Hot water can be distributed in baseboard radiators or radiant floor systems. Steam boilers are more complex than hot water boilers and have special gauge glass, pressure gauges, blow off valves and automatic feeds. Steam boilers operate at a higher temperature than hot water boilers, and are inherently less efficient.  Hot water boilers can be small, compact, energy efficient and low maintenance.

You can learn more about the efficiency ratings of boilers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s website.

Boilers can use a variety of fuels including natural gas, propane, oil or electricity.
